Amal al-Atrash, better known by her stage name Asmahan, is considered to be one of the Arab world's most distinguished singers of the 20th century. Amal al-Atrash was born in The al-Atrash family were Jebel Druze leaders. Her father was supposedly serving as governor of the Demirci district in Turkey, during the last days of the Ottoman Empire.

They stayed in Egypt after her mother refused to rejoin her husband in the Jebel Druze. They went from living in relative wealth to humble circumstances; her mother took a job as a servant. She adopted the stage name "Asmahan". She married Hassan al-Atrash, hereditary emir of the Jebel Druze around He was is seventh wife he had been divorced six times.

She then spent six years in the Jebel Druze, living as a Druze princess. They had daughter Camelia.
