Jean E. Sammet was born on March 23, in New York City. She was raised by her parents, who were both lawyers, Ruth and Harry Sammet. From a very young age J. Sammet was interested in mathematics. However because she was a women she was not allowed to attend the Bronx High School of Science.

She continued to pursue math through out high school at Julia Richman High School. Once J. Sammet graduated high school she chose Mount Holyoke College, which was known for having a competitive mathematics program. Following her masters in , J. Sammet worked as a teaching assistant at University of Illinois. During this time period J. Sammet believe that she wanted to be a math teacher and applied to a couple schools including one in New Jersey.
